We just purchased a 2003 Beetle on Saturday for my daughter. Great looking car. But the next morning, the car would not start. Turning the key in the ignition resulted in a clicking noise. However, nothing had been left on to drain the battery. My husband jump-started the battery, but not the ESP light will not go off and the CD player will not play. Can you tell me what the problem might be? Research on line suggests some drivers have problems with the Beetle''s electrical system. Is that where we are headed? Should we return the car?

The EPC could be cause by a faulty brake light switch which is under recall, If you can send me your VIN I will run it for recalls. Also when you state that the CD does not play does the radio come on or not? Please advise

Reply to David's Post: I do not have the car at my office, so I cannot provide the VIN Number at this time.

The radio seems to work fine. The CD player will work for a short while, then stop and a "Magazine Error" light comes on. If my daughter turns the car off, the CD will usually start playing for a short while, then the error light comes on and the CD stops playing. Only newly purchased CDs are in the player.

This is usually a changer going bad, you can sometimes pull the unit out and clean each cd but if there new then its a sign that the changer is starting to fail. You can send me the VIN anytime and I will run it for recalls. But the EPC normally comes on with the brake light switch malfunction.
